Tanjung Puting National Park

History of Tanjung Puting

Originally established as a wildlife reserve in 1935, Tanjung Puting gained national park status in 1982. The park is globally renowned for its orangutan conservation efforts, particularly through Camp Leakey, a research and rehabilitation center founded by Dr. Biruté Galdikas. Over the years, this conservation project has played a crucial role in protecting and rehabilitating orangutans that have been displaced due to deforestation and illegal wildlife trade.
Tanjung Puting is a biodiversity hotspot, boasting a mix of lowland tropical forests, mangroves, and swamp forests. Besides orangutans, the park is home to over 220 bird species, clouded leopards, sun bears, and crocodiles. Visitors often find themselves in awe of the untouched beauty and rich ecosystems within the park.

The park’s biggest attraction is its orangutans, one of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. Camp Leakey and other feeding stations, such as Pondok Tanggui and Tanjung Harapan, allow visitors to observe these fascinating primates up close. Travelers can contribute to conservation efforts by choosing responsible tour operators that support the park’s initiatives.

Beyond orangutans, Tanjung Puting is home to unique species like proboscis monkeys, known for their distinctive large noses, and agile gibbons that swing effortlessly through the trees. Birdwatchers will be delighted by sightings of hornbills, kingfishers, and eagles.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (June to September) is the best time to visit, as wildlife is more active and river conditions are optimal. However, visiting during the wet season can be rewarding for those who prefer a quieter, more immersive jungle experience.
